This information will attempt to streamline your start-up efforts, be advised that other issues may impact your particular line of business. What follows is a quick checklist of some of the Federal, State and Local requirements to conduct business in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Federal Requirements

Employer's Identification Number - To inform the Federal Government that you are in business, fill out a one-page application, Form SS-4. You can use this identification number when filing your tax returns, when applying for commercial banking accounts as well as for other identification purposes. Call the Internal Revenue Service, 215-574-9900.

State Requirements

Fictitious Name - If you intend to conduct business under any name other than your own last name, then you will need to register that name with the PA Department of Corporations. This process entails a small application fee and the cost to advertise an announcement in your local newspaper and a legal newspaper. If you have incorporating concerns, this agency is also responsible. Call the Pennsylvania Department of Corporations, 717-787-1057.

State Tax Identification Numbers - You will also need to call Harrisburg to get your income tax account identification number. Also, your business may need to collect sales tax. You can get these state tax related issues addressed by the PA Department of Revenue. Call the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue, 717-787-8201. You may also have to call the Pennsylvania Bureau of Employer Tax Operation for your Employer State Unemployment Tax Identification Number, 215-560-1828.

Workers' Compensation - For compliance purposes or for detailed information, contact the Pennsylvania Bureau of Workers' Compensation. Call the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry, 800-482-2383

Local Requirements
